Challan in court? Contest it
E-challan services
Check, pay, or find out what a fine is for.
What challan status means
Each challan shows one of these.
Pay on time. Unpaid challans can go to court, and can hold up selling your vehicle.
- Pending Not paid yet. You can pay it online.
- Disposed Settled. There’s nothing to pay on it.
- Verifying A payment started but hasn’t settled. Check it before you pay again.
- In court Sent to a court, often after it stayed unpaid. Pay or contest it in the virtual court.
Spot a fake challan
Scam messages copy real challans to take your money.
- Never open links or install apps sent by SMS or WhatsApp.
- Check the address. Government e-challan sites end in .gov.in or .nic.in, and lookalike spellings are fake.
- Open a site yourself and check the challan there, not from a message.
- Never share an OTP to ‘cancel’ or ‘settle’ a challan.
- Paid on a fake site? Call your bank at once, and report it on 1930 or cybercrime.gov.in.
Questions
Can’t find yours? Contact us and we’ll help.
What is an e-challan?
A traffic fine issued electronically, by the traffic police or a camera. It is linked to the vehicle number, so it reaches the owner.
How do I check if my vehicle has a challan?
Enter your vehicle number above. You don’t need the challan number. It’s worth checking now and then, because the SMS goes to the number on record, which may be old.
How much is my challan?
It depends on the offence and the state. Go by the amount on the challan’s record, not one quoted in a message. You can see the penalty for each offence on our traffic fines page.
I paid, but it still shows pending. Should I pay again?
No. If you paid on the official portal, use its Check Pending Transaction service to see where the payment stands. Keep your bank message as proof.
What happens if I don’t pay?
It can go to the virtual court, often after 60 to 90 days. The period depends on the state and the offence. Unpaid challans can also hold up RTO work on your vehicle or licence.
Can I check a vehicle I plan to buy?
Yes. Pending challans are linked to the vehicle number, so check it before you buy and ask the seller to clear them first.
My challan is wrong. Can I contest it?
Yes. Raise a grievance on the official portal, or contest it in the virtual court if it’s already there. We can’t cancel or reduce a fine.
Is Vahan Radar the official e-challan website?
No. Vahan Radar is an independent service, not a government website. The records are the government’s, and we can’t correct them. You can check and pay challans here, and the fine goes to the government.
Is it free to check?
Yes. Checking is free and needs no sign-up. Paying through Vahan Radar adds a convenience fee of ₹99 per challan, GST included.
